Graphic Design

graphic design infographic / Paul Compton

I’ve been doing infographics for 30 years. George H. Bush was President when I was learning the ropes from the graphics pros at The Washington Times. At the core, you have to understand the information first, then know the proper types of chart plotting that is appropriate for the data you are depicting. There are a lot of beautifully rendered infographics out there that make no sense. We’ve all seen them—where you stare at a chart and have a brain cramp trying to make sense of the data. No, it’s not you. It’s a failure of design. If it’s not easy to understand, beauty doesn’t matter. That said, I see no problem with making clearly conveyed graphics beautiful.
